abstract = "Located on the middle course of the Rio Grande, with a flooded
area of 1440 km² and a net storage volume of 17.217 hm³, the
Furnas dam is one of the major power generators of the country.
The main function of the reservoir is to generate energy, with an
ability to generate 1,216 megawatts of power. That also provides
other uses, such as pisciculture, tourism and recreation. Between
2013 and 2015, it was observed a low precipitation on that site,
with an increase in 2016. Thus, the purpose of this research was
to evaluate the water mirror recovery in the reservoir in the
2015-2016 period and to compare that with the years of 2013 and
2014. It was used Landsat 8 images, path/row - 219/74 and 219/75
for the years 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. The images were
classified using the software Spring 5.2.3 in order to estimate
the water mirror area. Information from National Electric System
Operator and from Furnas'' quarterly newsletter were used to
obtain the storage volumes data, reservoir elevation and rainfall
profile. The data processing showed that during the 2015-2016
period there was a volume recovery of 377.73 cubic kilometers,
that represents a rise of 32% in the stored volume. It was
possible, therefore, to estimate the recovery of water volume in
the dam and in the most critical points.",
